Taking its title from the beloved main character in "Fiddler," the beleaguered father of four daughters, each of whom leaves an insular Eastern European Orthodox life and enters the wider world. Mallet observed the prescience of the daughters' destinations--assimilation, intermarriage, political revolution and marrying for love. "This is the way Jewish life fractured over those hundred years" of the 20th century.

When her own children, raised as secular Jews, began exploring Judaism during their college years, Mallet did the same, reading voraciously on Jewish history around the world. Growing up in the 1950s, she had experienced the "chill" of the Holocaust and its horrors. "That very much affected one's own psychology and comfort with Judaism," she said. But her reading, as well as trips to Israel, Berlin and across the United States, was a process of discovering that all of the forms of Judaism are parts of its whole.
